- 4 slices of rye or sourdough bread
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup sliced onions
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 slices of cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Mayonnaise or mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
- Form ground beef into four patties, season with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook beef patties until browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side.
- Toast bread slices in a separate pan or toaster until golden brown.
- Assemble sandwiches by layering a beef patty, caramelized onions, and a slice of cheese between two slices of toasted bread.
- Grill the assembled sandwiches in the skillet with remaining butter until the bread is crispy and the cheese melts, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Serve hot with optional condiments like mayonnaise or mustard.

- You can substitute sourdough or white bread based on preference.
- Use any cheese melt like Swiss or American if desired.
