A simple yet flavorful classic patty melt, featuring seasoned beef, melted cheese, caramelized onions, all sandwiched in toasted bread and grilled to perfection.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of rye or sourdough bread
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup sliced onions
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Mayonnaise or mustard (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
  2. Form ground beef into four patties, season with salt and pepper.
  3. In the same skillet, cook beef patties until browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side.
  4. Toast bread slices in a separate pan or toaster until golden brown.
  5. Assemble sandwiches by layering a beef patty, caramelized onions, and a slice of cheese between two slices of toasted bread.
  6. Grill the assembled sandwiches in the skillet with remaining butter until the bread is crispy and the cheese melts, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Serve hot with optional condiments like mayonnaise or mustard.

Notes

  • You can substitute sourdough or white bread based on preference.
  • Use any cheese melt like Swiss or American if desired.
