Ingredients

  • 3 cups peeled, sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the apple slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and brown sugar. Cut in the cold butter until coarse crumbs form.
  3. Press the crumb mixture into the bottom of the baking dish for the crust.
  4. Sprinkle the reserved crumbs over the apple filling and bake for 40-45 minutes.
  5. Let the bars cool completely before slicing into squares.
